Origin & Purpose

Barghests, also known as Black Dogs or Grims, are shadowy beings tied to death and balance. These enigmatic creatures linger in and near graveyards, serving as silent guardians of the boundary between life and death. Their primary purpose is to hunt and destroy Caromassa—aberrations born from corrupted death magic. Barghests exist as a crucial force of nature, ensuring that the natural cycle of death remains undisturbed.

Born of shadow, Barghests are creatures of fear and fascination. They are solitary by nature, bound to their role with unwavering dedication. While intimidating in appearance, they are not malicious unless provoked or hindered in their pursuit of balance.

Characteristics

In their true form, Barghests are large, shadow-like canines with a fluid, ever-shifting appearance. Their jet-black bodies are wreathed in living tendrils of darkness, and their glowing red eyes burn with predatory intensity. They exude an aura of primal menace, moving with predatory grace that reinforces their role as relentless hunters.

Barghests can take on a human guise to blend into mortal society. In this form, they are dark-haired, sharp-featured, and intense, with piercing eyes that betray their otherworldly origins. Even in this form, their presence is unsettling, marked by an aura of mystery and quiet menace.

Abilities and Behaviour

  • Barghests wield the power of shadow, able to manipulate darkness as both a weapon and a shield. Their tendrils of living shadow extend and coil with deadly precision, striking down their targets. They can pass through solid objects in their true form and remain invisible in darkness, making them formidable hunters. As relentless trackers, Barghests are nearly impossible to evade once they have locked onto a Caromassa.

  • Though they are neutral protectors of balance, Barghests are solitary creatures, rarely interacting with others, even their own kind. They are purpose-driven, acting with cold efficiency to eliminate threats to the sanctity of death. In human form, they maintain a low profile, often taking roles near graveyards, such as caretakers or wanderers.

Modern Role

In the modern world, Barghests exist in the shadows of an increasingly disconnected society. Their graveyard haunts and ominous presence have given rise to myths and legends, but their true role as protectors remains hidden. While they may appear fearsome, Barghests are vital guardians, ensuring that the boundary between life and death remains intact and that no Caromassa escapes their wrath. In both their shadowy and human forms, Barghests are enigmatic reminders of the primal forces that govern life’s end.
